Medical surveillance

The medical surveillance of an employee involved with radiation work is dealt with in STUK’s radiation safety guide ST 7.5.

The Radiation Act (592/1991, revised 1142/1998) requires that employees classified as Class A radiation worker must register the name of the physician responsible for their medical surveillance.

The competence to act as the physician responsible for medical surveillance is decided upon by STUK based on section 2a of the Radiation Decree (1512/1991, revised 1598/1998).

Physician responsible for medical surveillance

In accordance with the Radiation Decree (revision 1143/1998), a physician who is responsible for medical surveillance must be well versed with occupational health care and the effects to health caused by radiation.

To be pronounced as competent, the physician must deliver an application to STUK, including the necessary documentation.

A physician is competent to be responsible for medical surveillances if

  • they have specialised in occupational health care or have completed the advanced course offered by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health.
  • they have completed the ‘use of radiation and its effects’ course offered by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health or equivalent.

A physician pronounced competent to be responsible for medical surveillance is given a certificate.

A list of physician responsible for the medical surveillance of Class A radiation workers is available from STUK: e-mail to jaana.sinisalo@stuk.fi.
