STUK at your service Welcome to STUK - Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority, Finland. There are about 350 STUK professionals at your service. We all want to keep our environment free from radioactive substances. Our objective is that Finns would be exposed to radiation as little as possible, whether it is natural radiation or whether the radiation is caused by man. Our goals are documented in the Quality Policy. The Quality Policy is the first guide in our Quality Manual. STUK strategy defines for example our mission and values. STUK belongs to the administration of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. STUK operates in a large field. We regulate the use of nuclear energy. We do research on the means of radon prevention in Finnish homes and workplaces. We study the radiation effects of cellular telephones. We make sure that when radiation is used the doses are kept as low as possible to get the wanted results. This concerns, for instance, X-ray examinations and sunbed use. We want to be certain of the high quality of our work. Therefore independent evaluation is important. Effectiveness of STUK´s Regulatory Infrastructure for Waste SafetySTUK invited European regulators to participate in an EU-27 Peer Review of its processes for regulating radioactive waste management activities in Finland. This peer review took place on November 2009. Expert team evaluated the research activities of STUKThe Ministry of Social Affairs and Health invited a multi-professional panel of international and national experts to evaluate the research activities of STUK. This evaluation was the third international evaluation. The panel concluded that overall STUK presents a highly impressive research portfolio, with well educated, keen and committed staff provided with an excellent working environment. The physical condition of the experimental laboratories is exemplary. International Evaluation of the Research Activities of the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) (Reports and memorandums 2012:9): http://www.stm.fi/en/publications/publication/_julkaisu/1790598 The previous evaluation took place in 2005. According to the report, the research at STUK is of high level but more attention should be paid to priorisation of the projects. The expert team comments that STUK has carefully taken into account the recommendations given in the earlier evaluation in 2000. Several of these recommendations had been successfully solved and implemented.
