Expert services

In its role as an expert organisation, STUK provides radiation measurements, measurement standard services and training services. In addition to these, it carries out separately agreed service projects.

Three fourths of STUK’s service volume comprises promotion of radiation and nuclear safety in Eastern European countries . In Finland, STUK produces services that demand special skills and equipment and are not otherwise available.

The services must promote the implementation of STUK’s mission. They may not conflict with STUK’s role as an independent regulatory authority and expert. When the service is funded by the state budget, it is invoiced at prime cost. In other cases, services are priced on commercial bases.

STUK is the national collector organisation for low-level radioactive waste. A plan for storing different types of low-level waste and arranging final disposal in an optimum, high-quality manner will be drawn up in the strategy period. The responsibilities for separated operational and regulatory activities will be determined in STUK’s organisation, the waste management process will be documented and safety requirements will be clarified.

Service volumes are expected to remain at current levels during the strategy period. Training in nuclear and radiation safety will be increased.

STUK actively participates in improving nuclear and radiation safety in Eastern Europe.
