Tero Varjoranta STUK's new Director General01/02/2012
Licentiate of Philosophy Tero Varjoranta began his seven-year term as Director General for STUK - Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority of Finland - on 1 February 2012. The Finnish Government announced the appointment on 13 October 2011. Varjoranta has a Licentiate of Philosophy degree in physics. He has worked at STUK since 1981. In 1997 he became Director of STUK's regulatory control of nuclear waste management and nuclear non-proliferation. During his time at STUK Varjoranta has served in several international expert and management positions. He came to the Director General position from his position as Director of the Division of Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Waste Technology of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), where he has worked since 2010 on leave of absence from STUK. STUK's previous Director General Jukka Laaksonen has had a long career within nuclear safety and security. He started at STUK in 1974 and has served as Director General for the last 15 years.
