Regional Laboratory in Northern Finland

The laboratory is responsible for research and environmental radiation monitoring related to northern food chains and radioecology.

The operational area of the laboratory is the northern half of Finland, comprising the two northernmost provinces of Lapland and Oulu. The laboratory participates in the national environmental surveillance programme. It studies the transport and accumulation of radionuclides in arctic and subarctic food chains, and in locally produced foodstuffs. It is also responsible for developing regional laboratory emergency preparedness.

The laboratory is the most northern laboratory in the European Union in the field of radiation monitoring and radioecology.

The aims of the research carried out are:

  • To perform radioactivity analyses of environmental and food samples in northern Finland in order to improve dose assessments and emergency preparedness
  • To develop practical countermeasures against radioactive contamination of arctic food chains, e.g. reindeer
  • To participate in the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program (AMAP)

Dina Solatie, Head of Laboratory, PhD

The Head of Laboratory, Dina Solatie, has experience in radiochemistry and radioecology, especially transport and accumulation of radionuclides in arctic and subarctic food chains, and particularly the food chain lichen - reindeer - man.

Other personnel

The laboratory participates in international projects and cooperation within the area of radioecology. It also cooperates bilaterally with Russia in the research of the Arctic Sea areas.
